Guest lectures at Central Film School

I’ve been invited to present guest lectures, practical workshops and project invigilation at the Central Film School in London for the Advanced Post Producton component of their BA Practical Filmmaking Course.

At this stage, the students are in the second year of their studies, and are taught fundamental pre- and post production methods of VFX compositing.

Entomophobia – In Violet

Worked with hours of stock footage to assemble the edit for director Robin Rippman’s Entomophobia music video for London-based band In Violet. The 3D graphic elements were created by Alex Piglowski and rigged by Dan Lavi.

It won ‘Best European Independent Music Video’ at The European Independent Film Festival and ‘Best Music Video’ at the Mexico International Film Festival in 2015.

‘Party for Freedom’ (for video artist Oreet Ashery)

Oreet Ashery is a London-based video artist who has been an active member of the art community since the 80’s.

She approached me about her project Party for Freedom – a travelling video installation that is accompanied by a live performance and carries strong social, political and abstract messages (some nudity in video below).

It is amongst some of the most unusual work I’ve done and was a valuable learning experience, as I was following the specifications of an artist with her own visual demands (rather than doing what I felt was ‘right’).

Night of the Procession (directed by Isabelle Rodriguez)

Night of the Procession is a short film by my fellow SAE alumni Isabelle Rodriguez. She approached me with a couple of challenges…

The first was to create a prop children’s book about a child dealing with the death of her beloved pet rabbit. This turned out to be really fun, and it was a unique experience to see my pictures turned into a hardback book:

The second request was to create an interesting transition between two worlds as the character slips away from reality. We ended up with a Gondry-like effect, in which the items inside the kitchen ‘blinked out’ and the room faded into the new location (2:10 mark in the clip below):

Limbo Town F.C. (IFT Campaign)

This was a series of spoof videos produced by Mouktar Mohammed about a zombie football team, Limbo Town F.C. commissioned by the Institute For Turnaround.

My role was to chroma the newscasters and insert formal, animated background. I was not involved in the graphic design.

‘The Big Move’ campaign by CIWF

I was commissioned by Channel 33 to provide the chroma and compositing work for CIWF (Compassion In World Farming) and their campaign against battery chicken farming.

This project was a challenge for me as we had limited green screen space and 15 volunteers who needed to appear as an ‘endless row of battery cages’.

The assembly process for the composition can be seen at 00:07 in the 2012 VFX showreel video.

Dave Shakespeare pilot (directed by Graeme Mackenzie and Frank Tamburin)

One of the first VFX jobs I did outside of film school. I worked as the VFX compositor, painter and rotoscoper on the Dave Shakespeare pilot (directed by Graeme Mackenzie and Frank Tamburin; produced by Mouktar Mohammed).

The half-hour comedy episode (based on William Shakespeare’s unwitting, time-travelling brother) is not available online, but I also did the worked on the following promo clip (motion graphics and titles):

As of July 2013, the show is slated for an animated series release.

A partial break-down of the graphics I worked on can by seen at 01:24 on the 2012 Title and Motion Graphics showreel. The images below show the before/afters of some corrections and screen replacements:
